Background Check FAQs

Background screening is one step to help ensure a positive and safer environment for swimmers. The background screening process is provided through Sterling Volunteers, one of the leading background check agencies in the country. Sterling Volunteers follows the best practices in data security. All person information is kept private and safe.

A. All Summer League Swimming member coaches age 16 or older,
B. Any adult having direct, regular contact with the swimmers or a swimmer, including but not limited to Team Reps, Volunteers, Staff, and Officials.

Background screening is available for non-coaches or coaches not in the Safer Summer Program for $36.

The cost of your background screening is included in your membership if your team is a member of  the SLS Safer Summer Program. Your Team Rep will provide you with a discount code to use during the registration process.

Counties in the state of New York charge a fee to access your records if you live or have lived in that state. You will be charged an additional $95 per alias to retrieve your records.

Unfortunately, Summer League Swimming cannot accept your background screening from another organization. Currently, there is significant duplication of efforts with regard to background screenings required by schools, churches, youth sports and employers in part because organizations are not permitted to share applicant’s background screening reports with each other. In addition, different entities use different criteria to judge someone’s suitability for employment, membership or service. There are no standard criteria by which search reports are evaluated.

Go to the  Summer League Swimming Background Screening page and click “JOIN NOW” to begin the registration process.

If you are a coach whose team is a part of the SLS Safer Summer Program, you will need the discount code from your Team Rep before starting the process.

You may check the status of your screening by logging in to your account on the Sterling Volunteers website. Please allow up to 10 business days for your background screening to complete.

One year from the time you had your background screening. You can check your status at the Sterling Volunteers website.

You can start the process as soon as your Team Rep has advised you to do so.

Your background screening must be complete and shared with your team rep before you are able to have contact with a swimmer. Please allow up to 10 business days for your screening to complete.

Summer League Swimming reviews and compares all background screening results against the membership criteria to determine eligibility. Those that do not meet eligibility standards will be notified through the contact information provided. Summer League Swimming receives monthly updates to ensure all members maintain good standing throughout the duration of the season. If a member is found to be ineligible at any point during the season, their membership is revoked. Automatic and potential disqualifying factors can be found HERE.

To maintain membership in Summer League Swimming, you must follow the coaches code of conduct and stay in good standing with all membership requirements. Email [email protected] with additional questions.

To complete a new screening during the current season, you will have to pay for the cost of the new background screening. Please contact us directly via phone 404-803-0420 or email [email protected] to place the order.
